Mission Statement

I grew up listening to my father’s house party music—The Commodores, Earth, Wind, & fire, etc. Then my older cousin bought me my first LP—Kiss, Unmasked. Years later, I bought my first few cassette tapes—Howard Jones, Simply Red, Poison—yeah, it isn’t pretty. Then I went to high school and listened to a wider range of music, usually exclusive to which group of friends I was hanging out with—the skaters, the stoners, the athletes, the nerds, etc. It wasn’t until I was in college that I truly felt open to alll kinds of music. Consequentially, I had a weekly radio show at university where my playlists were really tough to pin down—Billie Holiday to Jawbreaker to Gong to Green Day to Jimmy Smith.

Just when I thought I had a pretty healthy exposure to all kinds of music I moved to New York in the late 1990s and made friends with a lot of people who came from all over the world. I was immediately turned on to a lot of Latin american music, specifically from Brazil. From there, my musical travels led me to India, all over Africa, some small islands in the Pacific, and just about everywhere inbetween.

I’ve always loved music, I’ve always wanted to be a world traveller, not a citizen to any one country. Calabøca is an extension of that desire.

At the moment, Calabøca is a one-man operation. I’m not a musician, I haven’t been all over the world, but I do have is an insatiable curiosity with music. My aim is to share my own personal journey in learning more about how people all over the world are still making really good music.

All the best,
Brian
